Just as there are strategies for success in a regular classroom, there also exists strategies for success in the online classroom. Many of these strategies will overlap; however do not forget your "good study habits". You will need them in addition to others.
Most people are of the opinion that online classes are easier or do not require much time to complete. Oddly enough, the opposite is true. If you do not have basic computer skills, the online class can be your worst nightmare. In addition, they are not easier than the regular classroom. Online education is simply another method of presenting information. As a matter of fact, online classes usually cover the same amount of material as presented in the regular classroom.
Since online classes eliminate the opportunity for students to actually sit in a classroom, oftentimes an online class covers more material than the regular classroom environment. However, it must be pointed out that even though students do not meet in a particular classroom for an online class, there are numerous methods used for communication purposes. The method of communication is usually chosen at the discretion of the instructor. Most classes require the use of a bulletin board where students and instructors alike can post their thoughts, ideas and questions. This eliminates the need to meet at a particular time. In addition to the method of communication, you should be aware of your word choice when composing an email, bulletin board posting, or in some cases, "live time" chat. Keep in mind that these forms of communication are absent of any emotion. Many times the instructor cannot determine how a particular comment should be taken. Be sure to word your communications carefully.
The typical rule of good study habits encourages a student to spend two hours of study time for each hour of regular class. This is also true with online courses. Unfortunately, online classes can give too much freedom to the student. It is rather easy to forget assignment deadlines. Therefore, time management is a necessity. Be sure to logon to the web site at least once per day to check for new messages from your instructor and to clarify your assignments. Sometimes, the instructor might recommend more logons or a particular time for logons.
By establishing a regular logon time, it develops into a routine which will prevent missing important information. When you logon, one needs to go to the course assignment section, the course calendar, the course bulletin board and email. This will ensure that you have the necessary information to complete required assignments. Be sure to allocate the necessary time for the completion of required assignments. It does not pay to wait to the last minute to try to complete an online assignment. There are too many unknown variables involved. For example, on occasion an Internet service provider will lose connection with the Internet due to modem malfunction. This can prevent one from working for hours. In addition, the virtual classroom can experience some difficulties which will prevent one from completing work at the last minute.
